Your Emails Aren't Working

Mailchimp is one of the most installed and least used tools in Australian marketing. Businesses sign up, import a list, send a campaign or two, and then it quietly collects dust while they chase the next shiny channel.

Meanwhile, email consistently delivers a higher return than paid social for most categories, particularly e-commerce and professional services, and the brands winning with it aren’t doing anything magical. They just have someone who knows the platform properly. That’s what we do at Design Digital.

Automation That Actually Converts

A well-built abandoned cart sequence alone can recover between 5 and 15 percent of lost revenue for a typical e-commerce store. We’ve seen it happen with fashion and lifestyle brands who were sending nothing at all the day before we started. We map the full customer journey, build the logic, and write the copy, so the revenue that was quietly walking out the door stops leaving.

Segmentation Done Properly

Sending the same promotional email to a first-time visitor and a customer who has purchased four times is not just lazy, it actively damages your list. Repeat buyers unsubscribe when they’re treated like strangers.

We use Mailchimp’s segmentation and predicted demographics tools to make sure your VIPs get treated like VIPs, your new subscribers get properly welcomed, and your lapsed contacts get a reason to come back rather than a generic sale announcement.

Mailchimp At Work

Most people think of Mailchimp as an email tool. It’s not, and treating it that way leaves a lot of capability sitting idle.

The platform runs retargeting ads, builds landing pages, tracks purchase behaviour from Shopify and WooCommerce, and maps automated journeys triggered by real customer actions like browsing a product category, clicking a specific link, or reaching a spending threshold.

As a Mailchimp ads expert team, we connect those channels deliberately. A customer who clicks your email but doesn’t buy shouldn’t just get the same email again. They should see a retargeting ad. That’s the kind of related effort we bring.

Reporting That Means Something

Open rate is not a business metric.

It tells you whether someone glanced at a subject line, nothing more. What we report on is revenue attributed to email, which automation sequences are driving repeat purchases, which segments have the highest lifetime value, and where people are dropping off. If you’ve ever received a monthly report from an agency that showed you open rates and click rates but couldn’t tell you what the emails actually made you, you’ll understand why this distinction matters.

An Extension of Your Team

The concern we hear most often before someone signs with us isn’t about price. It’s “will you actually understand our brand?” It’s a fair question.

We’ve worked across fashion labels, health and wellness groups, education providers, and retail brands, and the brands we serve longest are the ones where we invested time upfront learning the tone, the customer, and the product before we wrote a single email. That investment shows in open rates that hold, then sustained.

Have a few more questions?

Our list is small. Is there any point engaging a Mailchimp agency yet?

A 400-person list of genuine buyers will outperform a 10,000-person list of unqualified contacts almost every time. List size is a vanity number. Engagement rate, purchase frequency, and revenue per recipient are the numbers that matter.

We’ve run email programmes for early-stage brands with under 500 subscribers that generated meaningful monthly revenue because the targeting was tight and the sequences were built with intention.

If anything, a smaller list is often easier to get right because you can be more precise about who you’re talking to and why.

We already have Mailchimp. Do we need to start over?

Rarely.

What we typically find when we audit an existing account is a mix of things: a welcome sequence that stops too early, automations that were switched off at some point and never turned back on, segments that haven’t been updated since the account was created, and a sending frequency that’s either too aggressive or so infrequent that the list has gone cold.

We work with what’s there, fix what’s broken, and rebuild only what genuinely needs it.
